How to reduce cart abandonment on Shopify: the causes, and the fix for each

About seven in ten carts are abandoned. Most of the reasons are known, surveyed, and fixable with settings you already have. The one that is not, the shopper who was leaving anyway, is the one an on-site recovery popup exists for. This page lists them by share, then the device where abandonment runs highest.

Cart abandonment

What shopping cart abandonment is, and how to measure yours

A shopper adds an item to the cart and leaves without buying. The rate is abandoned carts divided by carts created. The Baymard Institute puts the average across ecommerce at roughly 70%, aggregated from dozens of studies; mobile runs about 12 points above desktop (Digital Applied, 2026).

Checkout abandonment is the narrower number: shoppers who reached checkout and still left. The ones who entered contact details are the group Shopify's abandoned checkouts report lists and its recovery email can reach. The shoppers who left from a product or cart page never appear there.

Want to see what it costs you? The cart abandonment rate calculator turns sessions, conversion rate and order value into carts started and not bought, with the benchmark rate editable to your own.

Why shoppers abandon

Seven reasons shoppers abandon carts, the fix for each, and the mobile gap

Shares are from Baymard Institute survey data and Stripe's 2026 analysis; shoppers give more than one reason, so they do not sum to 100. Listed by share; the cheap fixes are further down, so start there and come back to the top. The last card is not a reason but a gap: abandonment runs about 12 points higher on mobile than on desktop (Digital Applied, 2026).

Just browsing or comparing

The largest group was never ready to buy on this visit. They are comparing, saving the cart as a wishlist, or waiting for a reason to act.

The fix

Give the hesitant shopper a reason before they leave: a reminder or an offer, on the page, in the moment. This is the cause on-site recovery exists for.

Extra costs at checkout

Shipping, taxes and fees that appear between the product page and the payment step. The top fixable reason in Baymard's survey.

The fix

Show shipping and tax estimates on the cart page, or earlier. If orders over a certain amount ship at no charge, say so on every page, not only at checkout.

Delivery too slow

The estimated delivery date arrives too late for the shopper's need.

The fix

Show realistic delivery dates on the product page and offer a faster option, even at a price. A known date beats a vague range.

A long or complicated checkout

Every extra field and step sheds buyers.

The fix

Fewer fields, progress shown, known data pre-filled. Shopify's one-page checkout handles most of this; the fields you add back are yours to defend.

Preferred payment method missing

The shopper does not see the wallet or method they expected.

The fix

Offer the wallets your shoppers use. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal cover most of it.

Mobile friction

Mobile carries the majority of traffic and abandons about 12 points more often than desktop (Digital Applied, 2026).

The fix

Test checkout on a phone with one hand. Large tap targets, autofill, wallets, and no popup that cannot be dismissed with a thumb.

The largest group

The shopper who was leaving anyway

Fix every checkout cause above and the biggest one remains: the shopper who added to cart and was never going to buy on this visit. No checkout setting reaches them, and no abandoned checkout email reaches the ones who typed nothing. The only moment to change that outcome is the moment they go to leave.

That is what Resparq does. It runs on your storefront, on product and cart pages, and when a shopper with items in the cart goes to leave, it shows one modal: an offer, or in AI mode sometimes a reminder with no discount. In Manual mode it is the offer you wrote. In Guided and AI mode the modal is chosen per shopper from signals like cart value, time on site, device, traffic source and past abandonment. Accept the offer and a single-use code is applied on the way to checkout.

The popup never asks for an email address. Keep Shopify's abandoned checkout email and your email app running for the shoppers who leave anyway; Resparq handles the moment before that. The abandoned cart app page covers how the two fit together, and popups vs email sequences covers the trade-off in detail.

A shopper adds at least one item to the cart and leaves without completing the purchase. Cart abandonment rate is abandoned carts divided by carts created. Checkout abandonment is the narrower case: the shopper reached checkout and still left. Shopify's abandoned checkouts report lists the ones among them who entered contact details.

The average across ecommerce is roughly 70% according to the Baymard Institute, so anything under that is better than average. Mobile runs higher, about 77% in 2026, and categories differ: apparel and electronics near 71%, luxury near 80%, travel above 87%. Compare yourself with your own category and device mix, not the headline number.

Carts created minus completed orders, divided by carts created, times 100. Shopify reports completed orders; carts created needs an add-to-cart count from analytics. If you do not have one, the calculator on this site turns sessions, conversion rate and order value into carts started and not bought, using the Baymard benchmark rate, which you can change to your own.

Fix the cheap causes first. Show total cost early. Turn on guest checkout and the wallets your shoppers expect. Shorten checkout and show delivery dates. Then handle the largest group, the shoppers who were never ready to buy on this visit, with a reminder or an offer on the page before they leave, and an abandoned checkout email afterwards for the ones who gave an address.

Shopify sends an abandoned checkout email to shoppers who reached checkout with contact details, offers accelerated checkout through Shop Pay and other wallets, and reports abandoned checkouts in the admin. It does not act on the store itself while the shopper is still there, and it cannot reach the shoppers who left from a product or cart page without entering anything.

It works on the storefront, on product and cart pages, while the shopper is still there. On desktop the exit trigger watches for the cursor leaving the page, and in Guided and AI mode a variant can also fire on a timer on the page, on any device. On mobile there is no cursor, so Guided mode and AI mode use that timer, starting once the cart has items, and, for exit-intent variants, the shopper coming back to the tab after switching away. Manual mode on any plan can switch on a time-delay trigger that fires once the cart has items. The popup never asks for an email address, and an accepted discount is applied through Shopify's discount link on the way to checkout.

Measure against a holdout. In Guided mode and AI mode on Pro and Enterprise, 10% of eligible shoppers are held out and never shown a modal, so the dashboard reports lift against that group once it clears 30 visitors. Starter runs in Manual mode with no holdout, so it reports conversions and attributed revenue rather than lift. Recovered revenue on its own always includes sales that would have happened anyway.

No code. Install from the Shopify App Store, switch on the Resparq app embed in the theme editor, then switch the modal on from the Resparq dashboard. Two toggles, and it works with any Shopify theme. The scripts load deferred, after the page has rendered.

Fix the checkout, then catch the rest

Free Starter plan, 14-day trial on paid plans, two toggles to install. No email field, no theme code.
